Dr. Richard Lee Barnes

Dr. Richard Lee Barnes, 58, a Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 in Conway County, AR. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Black and Rev. Claire Dobbs officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 25, 2013 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home.
Born in Willcox, AZ, Dr. Barnes was a member of the United Methodist Church. He earned his Bachelor Degree and Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona in Tucson and received an LLM from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Dr. Barnes served two terms on the Oxford Planning Commission, including one term as chairman. He held the Leonard B. Melvin Distinguished Lecturer in Law at the University of Mississippi since 1989. He was selected “Outstanding Professor of the Year” in 2006-07 and received the ”Faculty of the Year” award in 2007-08.
Dr. Barnes enjoyed nature and spending time outdoors practicing photography and mountain biking. He enjoyed his work as a skiing and snowboarding instructor at Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alexandra Dornan Barnes, a brother, Robert Barnes and his father, Hoyt Barnes.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Dornan Barnes of Oxford, MS; two daughters, Emily Anne Barnes Williams and her husband, Matthew of Washington, DC and Molly Kathleen Barnes of Oxford, MS; one son, Robert Clayton Barnes of Albany, NY; his mother, Marie Turner Chester of Mt. Pleasant, TX; a sister, Venita Lloyd of Mt. Pleasant, TX and two brothers, Ronald Barnes of Stillwater, OK and Randy Barnes of Pomerene, AZ.
