Biography

Mrs. Dorothy Louis Stephens Vines, 85, of Diamondhead and formerly of Oxford, MS, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Pass Oaks Personal Care Home in Pass Christian, MS. The Funeral Service will be held Friday, June 15, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vines was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bay St. Louis, MS and also the First Baptist Church in Oxford, MS. She was a member of The Eastern Star. She was a member of the Oxford Ladies' Auxiliary, the former President of the Oxford Pilot Club, the Centennial Study Club, the Oxford Country Club Ladies’ Golf Association and the Diamondhead Country Club Women’s Golf Association, where she was also member of the “Hole in One Club”, having shot 3 "holes in one" during her many years of enjoyment of golf. Following graduation from University High School, Mrs. Vines attended the University of Mississippi. Near the end of World War II, she worked for the U.S. Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, she returned to Oxford, married her husband and was employed by the University of MS as a secretary to Coach John Vaught. Mrs. Vines was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, and with her husband of 62 years, enjoyed art, painting, travel and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Murray “Red” Vines; sister, Julia Stephens Flowers; and parents, Richard Louis Stephens and May Brown Stephens Varner.

Survivors include her daughter, Shellye Vines McDonald of Diamondhead, MS; two sons, Stephen Lamar Vines of Nashville, TN and Hayden Lane Vines of Diamondhead, MS; four granddaughters, Ribbon Robison Shaw of Oxford, MS, Kayla Vines of Grenada, MS, Kathryn McDonald of Jackson, MS and Kendall Lane McDonald of Diamondhead, MS; a grandson, Charles Hayden Vines of Grenada, MS; two great grandsons, Jackson and Aubrey both of Oxford, MS; nine nieces, Carol Ann Fuller of Bartlett, TN; Linda Stephens Ford, Phoenix, AZ; Barbara Anderson, Seattle, WA; Hillary Abhold, Los Alamos, NM; Janet Stephens, Berkeley, CA; Lori S. Huthoefer, Colorado Springs, CO; Anna Li Stephens, Dallas, TX; Babette Chittom Cooper and Daneise Chittom Burnette, both of Germantown, TN; three nephews, , Richard Flowers of Pass Christian, MS; Louis Stephens of Phoenix, AZ and Brooks Chittom, Jr. of Brandon, MS; and two brothers, Richard Stephens of Seattle, WA and Alfred H. Stephens of Diamondhead, MS and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
