Raymond Lamar Thorton

Mr. Raymond Thornton, 90, retired insurance appraiser, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at his home in Oxford, MS. The funeral service will be Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Allen and Dr. Erik Hankins officiating. Burial will follow at Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will precede the funeral service from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Mr. Thornton was born in Tunica, MS and was the widower of Mrs. Louise Metts Thornton. A WWII veteran, he served as a Tech. Sergeant for the United States Army. Aside from insurance, Mr. Thornton was a body shop foreman and managed the Oxford Country Club for twenty years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the VFW and the Water Valley Country Club. Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Thornton and Edward Thornton.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harrison Thornton of Oxford, MS; a daughter, Marie T. Sanders of Germantown, TN; two sons, John George “Rusty Thornton of Oxford and Thomas Thornton of Oxford, MS; five stepsons, Gary Whitworth and Steve Whitworth both of Batesville, MS, Jim Whitworth of Wasco, CA, Carl Whitworth of Lambert, MS and Harry Whitworth of Marks, MS; two sisters, Dorothy Elizabeth Aldridge of Marks, MS and Grace Louella Dawkins of Sardis, MS; twenty grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

In honor of Mr. Thornton’s service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Army will fly over Waller Funeral Home during the time of services.
