Biography

Mr. Philip James Wells, 91, a retired customer service representative with the US Postal Service in New Orleans, LA, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the MS State Veterans Affairs Home in Oxford, MS. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Joe Tonos officiating. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, LA.

Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, Mr. Wells was the widower of Mrs. Geraldine Miller Wells. At the age of 17, he signed with the New York Giants Baseball Team; following a brief stint in the minor leagues, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Staff Seargeant in the Infantry during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to baseball in the Texas League. Mr. Wells moved to Oxford, MS in 2006 where he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #285.

Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis A. Wells of Oxford and one brother, Morgan Wells of Mandeville, LA.

In honor of Mr. Wells' service to his country, the flag of the United States Army will be flown over Waller Funeral Home during the time of services.
