Obituary for David Lee Woody

David Lee Woody, 88, died Sunday, February 4, 2018, at Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Oxford, MS. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Derek Starnes, Rev. Steve Quarles and Phil Newberry officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, February 6, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home and beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday.

Born in Columbia, TN, to the late John Whithorn and Mary Elizabeth Nickleson Woody, Mr. Woody was a retired truck driver and had worked for Mason and Dixon Truck Line and also Transcon Truck Lines. He was a very active church member and a lifelong Baptist. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist where he served as a deacon and a Youth Sunday School teacher and a former member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis where he also served as a deacon and Youth Sunday School teacher. He had a great love of music and enjoyed playing the guitar. Mr. Woody was a veteran of the United States Army, achieving the rank of Corporal and serving during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Woody of Oxford, MS; daughter, Vicki Woody Lanier and her husband, Sammy of Water Valley, MS; son, Timothy Lee Woody and his wife, Tricia of Pontotoc, MS; half-sister, Nancy Woody West of Nashville, TN; half-brother, Howard Woody of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Amanda Lee Heavner and her husband, Jason, Rachel Leigh Woody and David Zachery Woody; step-grandson, Ricky Lee Staggs and his wife, Megan and great grandchildren, Lyric Jean Heavner, Parker James Seale and Jade Analise Staggs.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Woody’s memory may be made to Sav-A-Life, The Pregnancy Test Center, P.O. Box 1193, Oxford, MS 38655 or Shiloh Baptist Church Youth Fund, 31 CR 429, Oxford, MS 38655.

In honor of Mr. Woody’s service to our country, the flag of the United States Army will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.
