Waller Funeral Home established by Don and
Patsy Waller began operation in December of 1977. At that
time, the Wallers dedicated themselves to the principle of
"our family serving your family"
with compassion, commitment, and professionalism through a
locally owned and operated funeral home.
While many changes have occurred during
the years, our dedication to these principles remains. The
decision to enter funeral service followed careful thought
and soul-searching. Mrs. Waller was unsuccessful in a re-election
bid for Chancery Clerk of Lafayette County in August 1975
and had become accustomed to the challenges of balancing a
career with her role as homemaker. Immediately the Wallers
began praying for Gods leadership in finding an endeavor
in which she could become involved. In time, the Wallers were
led to the idea of establishing Waller Funeral Home. After
a long search and negotiations, property was purchased on
newly four-laned Highway 6 West and the building covering
more than 11,000 square feet was constructed.
Hopes for success were high as the chapel was dedicated on
December 11, 1977 and spirits were lifted by the wonderful
turnout for the dedication. The crowd filled the chapel and
overflowed into the hallways. Much thought and preparation
had gone into plans for the dedication service and open house.
It was an exciting day for all.
But the years from 1978 to 1982 were long ones. At one time,
more than 14 weeks went by without a death call. The Lord
taught much patience. Realistically the Wallers knew a town
the size of Oxford was small for the support of two funeral
homes, and the performance and tradition of the Douglass-Elliott-Overstreet
succession was respected and admired. Only when they were
able to purchase Elliott Funeral Home on May 1, 1983, from
Edgar Harold Overstreet, did they begin to justify their existence.
With this purchase the Wallers were able to employ their daughter
and son-in-law, Beth and Bob Rosson. Bob immediately began
attending mortuary school and completed his internship under
Bobby Phelps, who has been a faithful employee since the beginning
of our business. Beth began working alongside Patsy learning
the responsibilities of funeral service and funeral home management.
In 1984, another funeral home, Oxford-Thomas Funeral Home,
was established. Again, two funeral homes seemed too many.
On September 1, 1987 the Wallers purchased Oxford-Thomas Funeral
Home and sold the property to Hodges Funeral Home, which had
long served the black community in Oxford.
Through the years, many improvements and additions to the
building, equipment, and surroundings have been made. Major
enhancements have included assuming ownership of Eastover
Memorial Cemetery in 1987 and constructing a large addition
to the funeral home in 1993.
From the beginning, the funeral directors of Waller Funeral Home have been licensed, qualified and well trained. Presently Bob Rosson, Bobby Phelps, Rocky Kennedy and Brett Rosson are licensed in all areas of funeral service. Don and Patsy Waller and Beth Rosson are licensed funeral directors. Sally Kate Rosson Walker, now manages the insurance office and is serving an internship to become a licensed funeral director. She also assists in many other areas of the funeral home.
Due to health problems, Patsy Waller gave up active daily
participation at the funeral home in August 1988. The operation
is now in the capable hands of Robert Theron "Bob"
Rosson, Jr. CFSP and Beth who, along with an excellent staff,
are continuing the theme of "our
family serving your family".
